Pulau Komodo, directly in the centre of the island-strewn strait between Sunbawa and Flores is the home of the world’s largest reptile, the Komodo dragon. This giant monitor lizard is one of the world’s oldest species, a close relative of the dinosaurs that roamed the earth 100 million years ago. Komodo island lies 500 km east of Bali and is 30 km long on its north-south axis and 16 km at its widest point. The island’s parched hills are covered with scrub brush and small palm trees. Several hundred adult lizards live on Komodo. The adult male can reach three meters in length and weigh 150 kilograms. Females attain only two-third of this size and lay up to 30 eggs at a time. The greatest threat to the monitors comes from deer poaches, who kill off animals upon which the lizards feed. Dogs are sometimes abandoned on the island and compete with the dragon and eat the dragon’s eggs.

Amanwana (peaceful forest) is the only resort located on the island of Moyo, a nature reserve east of Bali. No motorised transport

Fortunately all three Gili Islands will not permit any type of motorised transport on them and therefore rely on bicycles or horse and carts, locally known as ‘Cidomos’. Bicycles can be rented from any of the kiosks and cost from around Rp20,000 an hour, or better value, ask for the daily rate. Cidomos (local horse and carts) are easily located all over the islands but tend to hang around the harbour and busy spots, arrangements can be made if you are staying in a more remote place on the island, for instance a late ride home…. Haggling is the norm, and always agree a price before your journey

Tehya also got to see her first ever coloured starfish – it was bright blue and she was delighted!!! (photo a little out of focus as using throw away camera).
I am proud to say that her skills in the ocean with not only a mask but a snorkel too are exceptional for a four year old, she was out with us for about an hour – occasionally getting lifts on our backs if she felt a little tired.

Later that afternoon I went out on my own and I saw beautiful blue and pink corals, I spotted two more turtles  and I got to see several large puffa fish, various colour’s of christmas tree anenomies popping in and out of the coral, sea ferns, so many different types of fish I lost count and my most thrilling sighting of the afternoon two large octopus that changed colour when I swam over them. The wonderful thing about Coral Beach 2 is that you can access fantastic snorkelling just off the beach without having to swim very far which reduces the need for expensive tours and boat trips.
